2/4: Chord Progressions

Notating Chord Progressions

Chord progressions are notated as a series of roman numerals with additional symbols (optional).

While each roman numeral represents a scale degree, the chord type is represented by whether they are written in uppercase or lowercase, along with the added symbols.

For example:

Chord progression notation breakdown:

  • I - A Major chord on the 1st degree of the scale.
  • iii - A minor chord on the 3rd degree of the scale.
  • V - A Major chord on the 5th degree of the scale.
  • viio - A diminished chord on the 7th degree.
  • I - Another Major chord on the 1st degree.
