Does anyone actually get value out of Notationist? What exactly are we supposed to be learning?

At first I thought it was teaching me to sight read which is a pretty useful skill. Now it feels like it's trying to teach me to... tell which two note are furthest apart... which isn't a useful skill.

If you can't sight read exceptionally well, why on Earth would you need to be able to instantly recognize what a written P4 is vs a P5? It's one of those games where, if all you want is a high score, you can easily get it without learning anything so.... what am I supposed to be learning?

It's by far my highest lvl game and by far the game I've gotten the least out of.

Sight singing note are important like spelling the alphabet. Sight singing interval and chords are like reading words. Both are important to read music fluently.

ToneGym Hero: Pierre Thalamy

Fingerstyle guitarist, new dad, and self-confessed cheese obsessive from the heart of Comté country, Pierre Thalamy never expected to make music at all. He grew up as a devoted listener in a family where nobody played. In his mid-twenties, a roommate’s ukulele turned into Yousician lessons, then a guitar, then a couple of years of gathering dust. When he came back, he wanted to understand what he was playing, not just copy songs.

With 10-minute practice sessions squeezed into fatherhood, lullabies that quietly trained his singing, and ear training on the walk to childcare, he found that the “innate” musical ear he thought he lacked could be built one interval at a time. @Pierre Thalamy is this month’s ToneGym Hero!

Twinkle Twinkle is more Terrifying than you thought 🎃

Two versions of Twinkle Twinkle. Same melody. One of them makes your skin crawl.

The difference is seven tiny changes. A tritone where the fifth should be. A music box drifting 22 cents out of tune. Two notes a half step apart, flickering about 60 times a second, the same roughness that makes screams impossible to ignore.

I like these videos, as they allow anyone who's in the process of learning music theory to see and hear some meaningful examples on how music is affected by altering -sometimes so slightly- its basic components.

Interesting. I also enjoyed this format for learning applied theory. A question, why did the chant work with the melody? The video doesn't explain why, like it did with the other changes. Counterpoint? But what are the intervals between each note, why do they add to the creep, etc.
