A passionate musician who rediscovered her love for music in retirement, leading to a vibrant involvement in multiple bands at the Portsmouth Music & Arts Center, Terri Winters balances her musical pursuits with hobbies like running, skiing, and gardening. This month's ToneGym Hero is an inspiration to all.
Good stuff. I, too, rededicated myself to music after retirement (in 2022). Love the music choice of Angel From Montgomery. I get together regularly with two of my brothers and my best friend from high school to jam, and this was on our jam list for a while. It was one of our better songs.
You have great taste in music. You've got a friend has always been one of the theme songs to my life too. We are kindred in that way. It's awesome that you have rekindled music in yourself too and that you are doing all these cool new things like learning to sing rock n roll even after retiring. Life is a journey and you are savoring and slaying! You are so cool!
Hi Terri. I so enjoyed reading your article and listening to Angel by your band - The third floor. I think that you are right - it is so important to play with others. I find your musical journey very inspirational. I wish that we lived closer - I think that we could be good friends. Wishing you everything good going forward !
Terri. Wonderful to see you get recognized and to learn more about you. I’ve always appreciated how you support everyone on ToneGym. What you’re doing with your time and talent is fabulous. Portsmouth is one of my favorite places on earth. Enjoy and see you on the slopes someday!
Hi Terri, lovely to hear more about your life and your love for music. Your commitment to learning to play jazz and your openness to new opportunities is so inspiring! I've often seen you helping and supporting others in the comments on ToneGym - we're all over the world and in different places in life, and you never know when a kind comment or a little bit of help might be particularly meaningful to someone. Thanks for sharing a bit about your life and your passions. You rock Terri!
I feel a lot of tenderness and immediate empathy for all colleagues on the site who at some point could dedicate themselves to music or reactivate an old desire or dormant talent. Music truly is a universal language that connects us!
That's a beautiful piano you have there, and having it among books in such a cozy room sounds like a dream to me!
It's great to have you in the community! Stay passionate and full of life!
Thank you all for your kind words. I really love being part of this community! I've learned so much from you all. And @igor dinotte you've got me reading Arnold Schoenberg's Theory of Harmony! I feel like some secrets will finally be unlocked for me. I'll let you know.
Super fun to read that! Thank you for sharing that slice of your life with us, @Terri Winters (especially those of TGHs who are no longer in their 20s or 30s).
I envy the amount of time you play with others - still one of my goals with my bass.
Oh yeah - I used to HATE Route VI - now it’s one of my favorites… it will click for you at some point. :-)
It's only here at ToneGym where I talk about music. In my personal circle in real life, there is no one to talk about it with me!
I would love to discuss any topic in the book with you. Feel free to get in touch if you find yourself stuck on something, or if you want to share your impressions!
I think the book is useful even for those who have already mastered harmony because Schoenberg brings very interesting insights into creativity, music, and art in general.
@Terri Winters - I just wrapped up my Daily Workout & it contained Route VI. Made me think of this post and your slight disdain of Route VI.
Had to jump on here and ask - do you know about “reviewing” the answers after each game round? If you look in the lower right corner of the Route VI playing field, there is a scale. Once you play that question and get it right or wrong, you can click on that scale (or the letter “c” on your keyboard) and the game stops and you can ‘play’ (or hear) each of the answers. This helped me a ton on Route VI, where I can review how each of the progressions sound to my ear.
Late to the party once again...and astonished by your story and the energy you're driving into all those activities, specially those related to music! And what a voice, ma'am.
When I retire, I'll be thankful If I can still keep half your passion for making music, playing and singing. It's great to have you in this Community, @Terri Winters
@Cuantas Vacas You're so kind! I can highly recommend retirement. You just don't know how fabulous it is until you stop working at that job. Amazing liberation! I expect you will completely dive into your music. It is great being part of this community!
