Hello everyone,

Since my one year pro plan has just a little over a month left, I’m in the middle of deciding whether to go for a yearly subscription or a permanent membership.

I would love to hear opinions from those of you who have been through similar decisions and your thoughts on how it turned out.

I am currently enrolled in both SoundGym and ToneGym, and I'm considering joining GuitarGym as well, so it is quite a financial burden to get permanent memberships for all three, even during discounts.

However, as a person with high anxiety, it is hard to shake off the feeling that my ear training skills will fade over time if I stop training.

Your opinions would be very much appreciated.

From my perspective - time is the most important asset, money can be earned and lost but time is never gained, so think about that, what do you think is the best way to spend your limited time? doing all 3 subscriptions, doing 2 or 1 or none, you know the answer what's important for you, what will give bring the most meaning to your life.

if you're still not sure - ask yourself honestly why you need all of those subscriptions, what's motif and intention behind it, try to ask yourself and get deeper into it. Yes, it might take your time now, but you'll save a ton later. When you get things clear - take courage to act upon it, you'll find resources to do so.

My answer might not be exactly what you were looking for, but that's how I felt and thought when read your post.
Cheers!

I'm definitely going to re-up for another annual membership. I'm just not ready for a lifetime commitment, but, like you, I feel the need to keep the ear training going. ToneGym with the exercises waiting for me everyday, helps me keep up the training. Good luck with making this decision!

for what it’s worth your ear training skills absolutely will fade if you don’t continue to train them

Don't forget, there are resources for free members still, whether it's just the same three games again to keep you practicing a bit, or the learn tab and it's lessons.

But also these gyms are not the only way to keep your skills sharp. These are practical skills that can be applied to our listening and practice everyday, internet or not!

I think the Toothbrush makes a salient point - which is something I never thought I'd say before virtually meeting our friend here. Honestly though, it does make sense to consider why you are investing so much time and money into these skills, and if it makes sense to take a break there's no shame in that. It's not unlikely for some of us as humans (and dental hygiene tools, I've come to imagine) to underestimate our practical potential and spend more time than we should 'perfecting'.

Although personally I'd love to see a world where everyone had the time and money to use resources like these gyms. They really are great, and I'm by no means saying you should settle where you're at indefinitely.

I did one year, and then lifetime. I think it is worth it, play everyday (also recently did SoundGym lifetime).

I automatically did life time. I just listen to my gut. Unlimited gym member ship is a dream come true!

@Nicolae Orengo this is one of the things I struggle with - practical vs expressive. You have to have the tools to be expressive, but do we go overboard trying to perfect something where good enough might suffice? This is a challenge for me - judgement - hmmm. Sometimes I think I'm just going on faith that it will turn out.

I am active on TG and GG at the moment. I think I will go for another year on GG (but the platform is new so it is still too soon to say) and lifetime on TG.

The reason is I am kind of blown away by how well TG taught me especially interval recognition. I gained a new skill with very solid foundation - now it feels almost effortless most of the time - muscle memory. I am excited to learn more stuff.

I used to be active on SoundGym as well, reached diamond and quit. There was nothing to do for me anymore as I plateaued in almost every game. Partly because SG is much more dependent on you equipment - if you don't have decent monitors and acoustic - good luck (but don't get me wrong, SG is still awesome). I don't have this feeling with TG. Yes, I have plateaued in some games, but that is more my fault - lack of knowledge etc. I think a lot of games can be trained over and over, without hitting some invisible wall.

And of course, the comunity here might be kind of small, but everybody is friendly, supportive and helpful - it feels 'alive'.

So long story short, I think I will stick around on this platform 😅.

Taking time off can show you how much this training can solidify in your brain. I have taken breaks of a month or so and have been pleased that I can recognize an interval or chord in the middle of listening to something. Coming back can then sharpen up things pretty quickly. I'm also looking for new exercises to sharpen some of my skills. I like the drills in Theta music where you are to echo 2, 3, or more notes from a scale. That is both an exercise in intervals and in short term memory. Getting back to your question. I don't think your skills will fade with time if you take time off from the tonegym or soundgym. I think you would be impressed by what you retained and then later may discover other areas or exercises that would strengthen your ears.
