Well, a little bit of both. When I was a student, I never got very good at reading music fast, so competitions based on sight-reading are helpful for me, although I don't get good scores. The rest of competitions are mostly fun, but they also help with reflexes and quick decision-making.
The limited time factor makes a difference in how you use the skills you're developing in regular games. I would definitely play more competition games if it weren't for the fees!!
I'm trying to do my daily workout every single day, and then sing some solfege, usually one page from the book A New Approach to Sight-Singing. Every other day or so, when I see I have the time, I either dive hard into one of the competitions, do some more gym exercises, or go work on some more specific ear-training material that isn't really found here (hopefully yet!)
When I just started using this place I also started going to music college, and I used to practice on my phone during literally every single spare moment I had, even while in the bathroom lol
At first, you fight for being within the first 20 and get some points, but you'll be improving scores soon, as long as you keep on training and spending some cash on competitions (if your economy stands it).
@Shani Berger That's very cool. So you were using the platform on your phone? Thank you for the tip on The New Approach to Sight Singing looks great!
