Why do I need to do marketing work for ToneGym in order to earn alternate virtual instruments? I pay for this with actual money. When I buy a banana, I'm not asked to tell my friends about how great bananas are in order to unlock plantains and the lil' baby bananas.

I might not have noticed at all if the default piano instrument were not generally unpleasant to listen to. It tends to sound out-of-tune in chords. I was hoping one of the other instruments would be better, but it doesn't look like I'm going to find out.

EDIT: Resolved below. (The piano still needs a little help, though.)

I guess it doesnt show it if you go to the Earn More ToneCoins section, but you can get 30 per day if you complete the daily workout.

You can also earn some if you participate in the competitions, there is a entrance fee though, which shouldnt be too much if you do the daily workouts somewhat regularly. And i think you also get some for some of the achievements that are possible...

Hope that answers the question you didnt ask, dont mind it if you didnt want to ask it ^^

Are you doing the daily workouts? I only ask because it took me two months to figure out that that's how you get more tonecoins (prior to that I was only doing targeted exercises where I felt I needed the most work). Because unfortunately, when you click on 'get more tonecoins', it only tells you how to get more coins by sending emails to friends or sharing on social media. It should probably be made a bit more clear that the coins come from the daily workouts. If you're doing those workouts every day, the coins start adding up pretty quickly.

Most of the money earning paths here in ToneGym have more to do with motivation and challenges than marketing, that's just if you want quick coins =)
Like @Mike Check just said, solely on daily workout you can make 30 a day, and with competitions, the fee is small and if you are a decent competitor it will pay off (and if you aren't, you will exercise and improve, which is exactly what we are here for).
I got the complete collection without marketing a single time, and I haven't by far been the fastest or near the best earners in here. Hope you get an instrument you like soon =)
The Daylor sounds nice for me and you can get it with 24 coins, so less than they pay for a one day workout!

Oh, man. I guess I kept bailing out on the daily workouts because I kept running into Solfegiator while in public places where I couldn't, y'know, sing Do Re Mi to myself like a crazy person (I have now removed it from the rotation). As @Brian Blades pointed out, it doesn't tell you that this earns you coins so I was just doing specific exercises. I feel a bit like a dunce, but I'm glad I was wrong. Thanks to @Mike Check, Brian Blades and @Riv Kah for your help!

No worries, being new somewhere is always confusing =D
You can also customize your daily workouts and tune off Solfegiator so they will not put it there.

Does one win tone coins for participating in competitions, or just by winning them?

@Bradley Crowley : as long as you finish amongst the 20 best scores, you'll get an amount of coins relative to your final position (total jackpot is divided according to fixed percentages, you can check the numbers).

@Cullen Delmore : completing any learning program is another source for coins. I believe you can also get some when you reach 25%, 50% and 75% of said program, but I can't remember the exact figures.

But...I wouldn't expect much sound quality improvement with the rest of instruments available if I were you. After buying 3 or 4 different ones (including the expensive piano), I found them unusable for most of the games involving harmonies, so I've done all the work using just the default piano!

You don't. There are many ways to get ToneCoins, including the daily workouts. I've never done any recommendations and bought the Steinmay within weeks of joining. Just on daily workouts and learning.
