I really struggle with recognising the chord inversions, any advice on how to approach this exercise, what could I be listening for? Or is simply playing the inversions on the piano until I get familiar with them the only way to learn this?

Your turn, Yooval 😬😅😬

I personally decided to skip that game for the unforseen future. It’s really hard an time consuming to learn and I feel, that there are other skills I should focus on first (and which hopefully help me with my „musicianship“). It’s true that all musical skills will in some form give you more skills to express yourself, I think that recognising inversion is at this point of my journey not that relevant. Just my two cents. I think tonegym offers a lot of opportunities to improve, but I‘ve come to the conclusion, that I should focus on a smaller set of skills for a given time (also because it feels more rewards hence I‘m experience my progress in those restricted areas faster; I might broaden my skill set later on).

@Matthias CJB thanks for the reference 😁 I think you made a good decision for now, this game is advanced and should be approached once other skills have been mastered, here is the method I keep posting here, this happened more than ever in the last few days... 😁

1) So since this game is advanced I encourage you or I would recommend using a musical instrument or even an app on the phone like a virtual piano, don't fret and don't feel guilt about it, over time you will be able to drop this aid (promised)

2) use your instrument to detect the lowest note you hear (the bass)

3) observe the name of the given chord, play the chord for yourself if needed and observe its structure.

4) determine which degree of the chord does the bass represents

5) over time when it becomes easier to hear and separate the bass note, try to detect the next stage's bass by comparing it to the previous bass you heard, eventually that would enable you to forego the use of a musical instrument. But there's no rush.

6) this game requires you to sweat, decide on how much time you're willing to invest in it and then stick to the training religiously it doesn't matter if you finish a level or not but stick to the workout on a dedicated DAILY religious like routine

7) please report back on how do you do

I often seek out what the root note is, it often comes naturally to me if I hum/sing it. Then I compare it to the highest note of the chord. I haven't practised it very long so it definitely is a bit of a process making sure I get it right but I think that with time it will be easier to recognize certain qualities to the inversions, which someone mentioned in another post/comment

@yooval mann : Here's my vote for making it official. I'm gonna call them "The SEVEN STEPS (to inversions excellence)".👍😉

@Cuantasvacas nice one :) I'm going to revise my copy&paste program to include your title

I had that issue as well Like @Erik Björn , I use the highest note. I listen for which note in the scale it is. If I cannot hear it right away I try to sing / play the scale:

- If that note is a 5th, then we are in *root position*
- If it's the root, then we are in *first inversion*
- If it's the 3rd, then we are in *second inversion*

Listening to the lowest note has also been helpful to me. In the same way, I try to see which degree of the scale it is:

- If it's the root, then we are in *root position*
- If it's the 3rd, then we are in *first inversion*
- If it's the 5th, then we are in *second inversion*

Hope it helps!
